With many of us working from home now, it does not mean that we should neglect our “workplace” health. A healthy workplace in our current context will mean our work area at home as well as our team that we are still constantly in contact through digital means. How can we cultivate a healthy workplace with Work-From-Home arrangements?

1. Physical Environment

This is similar to how we should design our office space to make it healthy and productive for work. Tables and chairs of good height are non-negotiable for desk-bound workers. Long hours on the non-ergonomic workstations will be detrimental to the health and focus of the worker. Not only that, other elements such as

  • Area with good lighting and ventilation
  • Cables are well kept in the cable management box
  • Making sure the screen is of eye-level

Therefore, if some employees are facing difficulties trying to set up their workstations, it will be great if employers can step in to see if there are any areas they can help with.

2. Healthy Lifestyle

Work-From-Home provides us with more opportunities to have home-cooked food, which are relatively healthier, for our meals. With that, it will be good for companies to encourage a healthy lifestyle during this period as many of us are stuck at home 24/7. In addition to that, exciting challenges can be organized to keep employees involved. For example, cook-offs to see who can cook the nicest food, or even exercise together through a video call. Doing it as a team will make it more fun as the inertia to do things when you are doing it alone is usually quite high.

3. Mental Wellbeing

Work-From-Home may blur the line between work and home.  Some employees might not be able to find time to take a break as they toggle between work and other commitments. One great idea will be to set designated time slots throughout the day for your employees to take a short 5-minute break together either in office or from home.

It is important for us to be compassionate to our colleagues to support everyone through these tough times. Simple acts such as dropping messages to your colleagues can brighten up their day and let them know you are there for them.

  • Constantly communicate with each other
  • Give Assurance
  • Empathy
A healthy workplace starts with everyone feeling good, encouraged, and supported.
