As cliché as it sounds, change is the only constant. With technological advancement and changes in the business climate, are we still equipped with the right skill and knowledge to stay competitive? Due to COVID-19, we have witnessed how some roles are made redundant or how some people are not ready to Work-From-Home. With that being said, how do make ourselves constantly relevant regardless of the situations posed to us?

1. Take charge of your Personal Development

Instead of waiting for your company to send you for training, why not find ways to keep yourself relevant? Moving away from physical courses, webinars, and online training are increasingly becoming common as it makes training easily accessible to everyone. You can also consider reading to keep yourself relevant. However, attempt to read beyond what you specialize in. Jobs are evolving to comprise more than one function and collaboration between teams is the new norm. Therefore, knowing more than what you are doing can help you to see a bigger picture in the long run.

2. Know the Requirements

How to keep yourself relevant if you don’t know what is required of you? First things first, you can look through job advertisements of your competitors to look at the requirements stated in the job descriptions. If you realize you are lacking certain skills for a similar role, that might be the gap you want to address. Secondly, you can go to networking sessions or conferences to see what is the next big thing that will rock your space. Thirdly, read articles or industry news online that might give you some clue on what is to be done to keep yourself relevant.

3. Mindset Change

Being relevant can only happen if you want to. Change is painful but necessary. Being constantly curious is one important element in keeping yourself relevant. The passion to want to know more and upgrade yourself is intrinsic. There might be external reasons such as monetary, but if the drive isn’t strong enough, we might just be comfortable with the status quo. Surround yourself with like-minded people to go through this process with you. It is always easier to stay discipline with someone else doing it with you.

If you know of someone who is made redundant due to skillsets becoming obsolete, share with them how they can pick themselves up again and tackle the challenges of the world. Keeping relevant is a marathon that is tough and long, but the number of skills and knowledge gained will be worthwhile.

There’s no better time to start keeping ourselves relevant other than today.
