The “First Day of Work” situation is something that almost everyone will go through at least once in their whole lifetime. Beyond excitement, there will definitely be a tinge of anxiety to what to expect and what is expected of you on that day too. If your first day of work is tomorrow, fret not, here are 5 tips on how to conquer your first day of work.

1. Be Prepared

Do not assume that the office will have all the things you need. Bring your own stationary, food and anything necessary for work on your first day. However, please refrain from bringing too much or anything unnecessary as it will reflect on your attitude for work. In addition to that, being a little overdressed is fine for the first day. Observe the work environment and subsequently adjust accordingly

2. First Impression Count

You will never get a second chance to make a first impression. Be as genuine as possible and don’t try too hard to impress. Be respectful and polite to everyone and be open to get to know everyone. No matter the size of your office, words do spread around when there is a new person in office. Up your self-awareness game especially for the first few weeks, let everyone have positive feeling towards you.

3. Be Ready to Know New People

You can’t run away from introducing yourself to everyone in the organization on the first day. It will be great if you are able to prepare a 30 sec short introduction about yourself so that you don’t have to come out with something on the spot. This prevents you from saying anything weird or even having an awkward silence with the person. Usually, there will be an induction programme and a welcome lunch for you. Make sure you do not book yourself for any lunch appointments for the first week so that you can mingle with your new colleagues.

4. Observe Your Work Environment

Open your eyes and ears. Look at how the culture is like and who are the main stakeholders that you are working with. Identify who are the decision makers and who are the ones that can lend a helping hand to you at work. This will help you to better adjust and assimilate into the working environment. Observe the time that the employees go for lunch or even leave the office as all these little actions will constitute to your first impression as well.

5. Relax and Smile

There are 101 things to take note on your first day of work. However, it will ultimately differ from one organization to another. However, one thing that you will need to do for sure is to keep your smile and positivity on your face and relax. Being overly tensed and stressed will do you no good as well. Learn as you go, keep an open mind and you will be fine in no time.

All in all, it is important that the work environment you are entering is conducive for growth. Embrace all opportunities and seize the day!
